At the start of the Mass, a man shouting "Down with communism" was taken away by security officials. Others in the crowded booed the man for spoiling the atmosphere gucci bags and shouted "Cuba, Cuba, Cuba".
Just three days after saying that communism no longer works in Cuba, the 84-year-old German pope took a softer stance as he began a three-day trip aimed at boosting the Church's role on the island.
Arriving in Santiago de Cuba, he delivered a carefully worded, nuanced and balanced speech that was less direct in criticizing Cuba's one-party system but included some thinly-veiled phrases addressing its human rights record.
"I carry in my heart the just aspirations and legitimate desires of all Cubans, wherever they may be," he said, including the "sufferings" of prisoners and their families, a reference likely to be well received by political dissidents on the island as well as Cuban American exiles in the United States.
Decades of hostility followed Cuba's 1959 revolution but Church-state relations have improved steadily in recent years, helped by Pope John Paul II's landmark visit in 1998.
Benedict called that trip "a gentle breath of fresh air" but said that while great strides had been made, "many areas remain in which greater progress can and ought to be made, especially as regards the indispensable public contribution that religion is called to make in the gucci outlet life of society".
Cuban bishops and the government are still at odds over issues such as Church use of the media and public education, which the Church considers are fundamental to its role as a moral force in society.
Benedict is trying to cement the Church's recent gains here and offer more help in assuring that whatever transition comes is buffered by its social programs, such as care centers for the elderly and limited after-school and adult education programs.
Castro, younger brother of Cuba's revolutionary leader Fidel, warmly greeted the pope at the airport, grasping both of his hands and briefly bowing before him.
The president, who was raised a Catholic, was dressed in a dark suit and was accompanied by a full Honor Guard and artillery gun salute for the pope. When the wind blew Benedict's white vestments around his head, Castro put them back across his shoulders.
He then delivered a firm political lecture about the injustices of U.S. hostility toward Cuba, including a 50-year-old economic embargo, and the island's "tenacious resistance" to preserve its independence and "follow its own path."
Castro has steadily improved relations with the Church using it as an interlocutor on issues such as political prisoners and dissidents, while moving forward with reforms to Cuba's struggling Soviet-style economy.
They include slashing a million government jobs and freeing up some sectors to small-scale private enterprise. The Church has urged Castro to move farther and faster to modernize Cuba, both economically and politically.
SALVO
Benedict fired an unexpected salvo on Friday when he gucci shirts told reporters on his plane that communism in Cuba had failed and a new economic model was needed, adding that the Church was willing to offer its help "to avoid traumas."
The Cuban government offered a diplomatic response to the Pope's criticism, saying that Cuba would "listen with all respect" to the Pope and welcomed "the exchange of ideas."
In what appeared to be an effort to balance his remarks, Benedict made an apparent dig at capitalist greed on Monday, blaming the global economic crisis on "the ambition and selfishness of certain powers which take little account of the true good of individuals and families."
Cuba is going through a key moment in its history, Benedict said, hinting that with the advancing age of the Castro brothers the island was "already looking to the future."
Church officials say Benedict's schedule in Cuba has not allowed for meetings with dissidents, who say Castro's government flouts human rights and suppresses their voices.
The dissident movement Damas de Blanco, or Ladies in White, a group of Catholic women that campaigns for the release of political prisoners, said it had been told by Cuban authorities to keep clear of the pope's Mass in Santiago.
"They are going to present the pope with a facade, not with the true Cuba," said Ana Celia Rodriguez, a 42-year-old mother of three who is planning to try to attend black gucci belt anyway.

Santorum later lashed out at reporters
Santorum later lashed out at reporters, using a gucci shirts profane word as he accused them of "distorting" his speech.
Santorum told voters that Romney is "uniquely disqualified" to be the GOP's presidential pick and urged his supporters to stand with him even as he faces an increasingly improbable pathway to the nomination. Santorum said "the race isn't over until the people of Wisconsin sing," and urged them to give his underfunded, underdog campaign a chance to derail Romney.
"Pick any other Republican in the country. He is the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama," Santorum said at an evening rally near Racine.
Santorum later tried to clarify that he was talking only about Romney's ability to campaign against the national health care law championed by Obama and the Democrats. But the candidate's temper flared when he was pushed by reporters.
"On the issue of health care. That's what I was talking about, and I was very clear about talking about that. OK?" Santorum told reporters who asked him about the scathing criticism. "Come on, guys, don't do this. I mean, you guys are incredible. I was talking about Obamacare, gucci slippers and he is the worst because he was the author of Romneycare."
Pressed by a reporter from The New York Times, Santorum said: "Quit distorting my words. It's bulls---."
Romney spokesman Ryan Williams, who attended the event, said Santorum was "panicking in the final stages of his campaign."
"Rick Santorum is becoming more desperate and angry and unhinged every day," Williams said. "He sees conservatives coalescing around Mitt Romney and he's rattled by the backlash caused by his suggestion that keeping Barack Obama would be better than electing a Republican."
Campaigning throughout Wisconsin, which has its primary April 3, Santorum hammered Romney as a candidate conservatives should not trust. He seized on a Romney adviser's comment last week that the race's dynamic will change when the GOP settles on a nominee, likening it to an Etch A Sketch toy.
"I have not written my public policy pronouncements on an Etch A Sketch. They are written on my heart," Santorum said in a Fond du Lac bowling alley.
"Gov. Romney has said in response to the Etch A Sketch black gucci belt comment that he wants to assure all of you – he wants to assure that he will run as a conservative in the fall. Let me assure you, that I'm not going to run as a conservative. I am a conservative."
Santorum also called Romney "the one Republican in America who actually authored the blueprint for Obamacare."
"We have a candidate who is running against me who is uniquely disqualified," he said.
But that candidate is better organized and has a serious advantage on his way to clinching the GOP nomination with 1,144 delegates before the party meets for its convention in Tampa, Fla. Romney has won 568 delegates to Santorum's 273, according to The Associated Press' tally.
Santorum would need 74 percent of the remaining delegates to clinch the nomination before the national convention in August, and he acknowledges he is unlikely gucci shirts for men and women outlet to keep pace with Romney in spending.

Zimmerman claims he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin gucci handbags 2012 last month in self-defense during a confrontation in a gated community in Sanford.
Students held rallies on the campus of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee and outside the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center, where prosecutors are reviewing the case to determine if charges should be filed. The students demanded Zimmerman’s arrest.
Zimmerman spotted Martin as he was patrolling his neighborhood on a rainy evening last month and called 911 to report a suspicious person. Against the advice of the 911 dispatcher, Zimmerman then followed Martin, who was walking home from a convenience store with a bag of Skittles in his pocket.
“I don’t think a man who exited his vehicle after the 911 dispatcher told him to stay inside the car can claim self-defense,” Carl McPhail, a 28-year-old Barry University law school student, said at the Sanford rally.
The 70 protesters at the Sanford rally chanted “What if it was your son?” and held posters saying, “This is not a race issue.” Many carried Skittles.
Martin’s parents and other advocates have said the shooter would have been arrested had he been black.
“You would think that Sanford is still in the 1800s claiming that this man can call self-defense for shooting an unarmed boy,” restaurant owner Linda Tillman said.
The case has garnered national attention and civil rights activist Al Sharpton and radio host Michael Baisden planned to lead another rally Thursday in Sanford.
U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Fla., along with members of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, have asked that the U.S. Department of Justice to review the case, and White House spokesman Jay Carney said Monday during a briefing that officials there were aware of what happened.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Trayvon Martin’s family,” Carney said. “But obviously we’re not going to wade into a local law enforcement matter.”
Late Monday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott directed the state Department of Law Enforcement to help local authorities in their investigation. The governor said in a memo louis vuitton jewelry to department Commissioner Gerald Bradley that the circumstances surrounding the death “have caused significant concern within the Sanford community and the state.”
Prosecutors may not be able to charge Zimmerman because of changes to state law in 2005. Under the old law, people could use deadly force in self-defense only if they had tried to run away or otherwise avoid the danger.
Under the new law, there is no duty to retreat and it gives a Floridian the right “to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force,” if he feels threatened.
Prosecutors can have a hard time making a case if there is no one else around to contradict a person who claims self-defense, said David Hill, a criminal defense attorney in Orlando. So far, Sanford police have said there is no evidence to contradict Zimmerman’s claims.
“If there is nobody around and you pull a gun, you just say, ‘Hey, I reasonably believed I was under imminent attack. Hey, sorry. Too bad. But you can’t prosecute me,’” Hill said, somewhat tongue-in-cheek.
Gun control advocates said the case is emblematic of permissive gun laws in Florida, which was among the first states to allow residents to carry concealed weapons. Florida was the first state to pass a “Stand Your Ground” law, which has been dubbed a “Shoot First” law by gun control advocates.
Currently, about half of all U.S. states have similar laws, said Brian Malte, legislative director of the Brady Campaign, which describes itself as the nation’s largest organization dedicated to the prevention of gun violence.
“It’s coming to dangerous fruition,” Malte said. “There are more states like Florida.”
The “Stand Your Ground” law’s legislative sponsor, Florida Rep. Dennis Baxley, said it wasn’t written to give people the power to pursue and confront others.
“That’s not what this legislation does,” said Baxley, a Republican. “Unfortunately, every time there is an unfortunate incident involving a firearm, they think it’s black gucci belt about this law, and it’s not.”
